Constituents:

·         Haematoxylin
·         Flavonoids
·         Tannin
·         Resin
(N.B Haematoxylin is colorless crystal when pure, but on exposure to air acquires red color
It dissolves in alkali giving purplish color )

Uses:

·         Haematoxylin is widely applied unclear stain in histology
·         In ink manufacture and in dying

·         Saponins (guaiacsaponic acid, guaiacsaponin)
·         V.O (50% guaiol, sesquiterpene alcohol

Uses:

·         Treatment of sore throat and tonsillitis
·         Chronic gout and rheumatism
·         Blood purifier in treatment of poisoning (as diaphoretic, diuretic and antioxidant)
·         As test reagent for detecting oxidizing agent:
1.       In forensic medicine for detection of blood in biological sample
2.       Testing the purity of Gum Arabic
